Over £40m raised online for London Marathon 2018

Runners and fundraisers have raised over £40m for good causes using both Virgin Money Giving and JustGiving platforms during yesterday’s London Marathon 2018. 

Virgin Money Giving has said that runners have so far raised £21.8m for good causes on its digital giving platform after yesterday’s London Marathon. JustGiving meanwhile said runners and fundraisers have raised £22.3m in donations and Gift Aid since the event yesterday.  

Virgin Money, the official sponsor of the London Marathon, said it “expected to top £25m” in donations for the 2018 iteration of the event.

Virgin Money also said that £1.3m has been raised so far for the Teenage Cancer Trust, the official charity of the 2018 London Marathon.

Kate Collins, chief executive of Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “We hope that being this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year will be transformational in our ability to support young people with cancer. 

“Our runners have raised an amazing £1.3m so far and I just want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of them all for all their dedication and perseverance in completing this year’s event.”

Jo Barnett, executive director at Virgin Money Giving, said: “Donations continue to pour in and the runners can rest assured that more of their hard won donations will reach their selected good causes”. 

A spokesman for JustGiving said runners raising money on its platform have raised £22.3m including Gift Aid, and that its fundraisers also raised an extra £1.6m in offline donations. 

The spokesman didn't want to predict a final figure, but said JustGiving expected it to be "up on last year" when the organisation raised over £3m in the weeks after the marathon.
