The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced that the Caltrain Holiday Train will make nine stops on December 2 and 3 to help raise awareness of and funds to address needs in the region. As it has for fifteen years, this year’s Holiday Train will be decorated with tens of thousands of lights and make a total of nine twenty-minute stops, with families able to enjoy live, free entertainment at each stop prior to its arrival. Since the event’s debut, Bay Area residents have brought more than fifty thousand toys to Caltrain stations.
The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced the release of Serving Those Who Have Served (73 pages, PDF), a report commissioned by the foundation to determine how the county can better address the needs of its twenty-three thousand military veterans. Despite the efforts of community groups such as Good Samaritan Shelter Services, the Salvation Army, and Doctors Without Walls (also known as Santa Barbara Street Medicine), the report found that a lack of coordination among agencies hampered their ability to address the growing need for veterans services. According to the report, although the veteran population in the county is declining, the demand for services from aging Vietnam veterans and veterans of the post-9/11 wars is putting a significant strain on the Department of Veterans Affairs and creating a large gap in veteran care.
