Krysten Coombs got his World Championship campaign off to the perfect start as he cruised through his opening round robin match in Korea.
Coombs, top seed in the SS6 men’s singles, defeated Peru’s Hector Jesus Salva Tunque 21-6 21-9, wrapping up the victory in just 18 minutes as he looks to improve on his bronze medal-finish in 2015.
It was success too for Jack Shephard and Andrew Martin in the same class, both recording straight game victories against Korean and Chinese opponents respectively.
In the women’s SS6 singles, reigning world champion Rachel Choong mounted her title defence in style with a 21-8 21-6 victory over Poland’s Oliwia Szmigiel, while second seed Rebecca Bedford eased past Ireland’s Emma Farnham.
Choong took the court in the mixed doubles too alongside Martin, sealing two straight game victories to top their round-robin group.
Bedford also went unbeaten in the mixed doubles alongside France’s Fabien Morat, and she’s confident her winning form can continue.
“It was a great start to the tournament and I am excited to play the knock out stages on Friday,” she said.
It was disappointment, however, for Bobby Griffin in the SL4 men’s singles, as he lost both his matches in the round-robin stage.
In the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles, Alan Oliver and Dutch partner Megan Hollander also lost both their opening matches, the latter a thriller in which Australian pair Corrie Keith Robinson and Caitlin Dransfield triumphed 17-21 21-15 21-18.
