Facebook announces matchfunding for #givingtuesday

Facebook has announced that it will be matchfunding donations to nonprofits on its platform up to £200,000 as part of #givingtuesday, which takes place on 28 November this year.

Facebook made the announcement with a video on the site, saying it will “match up to £200,000 total in donations” with the site matchfunding “up to £400 per fundraiser and £10,000 per charity”. The video announcement for #givingtuesday has been viewed 1.6 million times and has been shared by over 1,000 people.

The news comes two weeks after the social media giant announced it was rolling out its Personal Fundraisers tool for European users.

Of its Personal Fundraisers tool, Facebook said: “Personal Fundraisers on Facebook will make it simple for people to connect with their community and raise money for the people and things they care about. People can now create a fundraiser on Facebook and easily reach their friends in a few taps with the relevant information.” 

More than 1,900 charities signed up for #givingtuesday 2017

In a statement issued today, the Charities Aid Foundation which leads #givingtuesday in the UK, announced that “more than 1,900 charities, organisations and individuals” had signed up to play a part during the day.

These include super market chains Morrisons and the Co-op, BT and Camelot, the operator of the National Lottery.

CAF have also said that it will boost donations by £100 for all organisation who open a charity account with the organisation by 30 November 2017.  

Ben Russell, director of communications at CAF, said: "With just one week to go, it is heartening to see how many businesses, charities and individuals have made plans to get involved with #givingtuesday".

#givingtuesday broke a Guinness World Record in 2016 for the most online donations in 24 hours, and raised over £38m for good causes around the world. Online donations to the event in the UK last year raised £6,000 a minute.
