7 November 2017 at the site of the leading business media holding RBC held a press-conference “Business and human rights. International cooperation. National strategy”, which was the first stage of the program of the delegation of Russian business in the framework of the 6th session of the Forum on business and human rights (November 27-29, Geneva (Switzerland).

 

The programme of the UN Forum on business and human rights in Geneva, which is the main global platform for discussion on the theme “business and human rights” and the establishment of international standards in the field of corporate responsibility and human rights, in 2017 for the first time officially included a special program of the Russian delegation under the auspices of the Russian national network of the UN Global compact (UNGC).

 

The program is formed so that the participants were able to present the position and experience of Russian responsible business in the field of human rights, confirm the involvement of the Russian leading companies in the global process of formation of the modern criteria of business leadership and consistency requirements for responsible business with international standards, and to inform the target audience of the international community about the results and prospects of activities of the Russian network of the UN global compact in partnership with the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and companies responsible for analysis and implementation in practical activities of the UN Guiding principles of entrepreneurial activity in aspect of human rights.

 

Among the key features of the program is joint with the national Global compact network in Switzerland thematic session in the format of discussion, which will cover a range of aspects related to the theme of business and human rights, including taking into account the Central themes of the Forum 2017 – access to remedies.

 

It is important that the Russian delegation considers this panel and overall participation in the Forum not as an end but as a stage, the next step is to expand the more international cooperation in the field of sustainable development. Therefore, in addition to experience exchange and expert discussions, the program of the Russian delegation at the Forum was the signing of the Agreement on cooperation in the field of sustainable development with the Swiss national network, visit Swiss company who adheres to the highest principles of sustainability and school of sustainable development of SUMAS. Expanded programme formed for a more in-depth discussion and identify further forms of cooperation of Russian responsible business and expert community on the site of the Global compact.

 

The official program of the Russian delegation also includes cultural greeting from Russia – a photo exhibition “Russia Breathtaking” and inclusive performance of “I dance”. The organisers of the programme, it was important to bring their personal, emotional relation to the theme, so many options were selected those that are best able to convey the readiness for dialogue and cooperation and reflect the systematic approach to support volunteer and charitable projects that have a socially responsible business in Russia.

Official partners and active participants in the program of the national network of the UN global compact are companies Severstal and Nordgold, also support the program and participate in a Russian-Swiss joint session of the company RUSAL and Sakhalin energy.

 

At a press conference presented their view of the topic and expectations from the Forum the representatives of the partners of the Russian program and the other responsible companies, experts on international and legal issues, as well as special guests, including Church Frank, Counsellor, Deputy head of the political section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Russia, Fedotov, Mikhail Aleksandrovich, Chairman of the presidential Council of the Russian Federation on development of civil society and human rights, Kuznetsov Vladimir V., Director of the UN Information center in Moscow.

 

The press conference participants discussed the degree of involvement of Russian business in the promotion and implementation of the UN Guiding principles of business activities and the rights of man, the place of human rights in sustainable development strategies of leading Russian companies, the prospects for dialogue between business and society in the aspect of human rights in Russia, and does Russia need a national plan to implement the Guiding principles and which of the possible international partnerships are most effective for promoting better mechanisms for the resolution of human rights issues in the context of corporate practices.

 

The national network of the Global compact during the press conference presented an examination of the Guiding principles on business and human rights in comparison with Russian law. Guidelines – the international standard for the state and the private sector. To further promote Principles in Russia and the productive work of the business for their implementation it was important to identify and to label those provisions, which are covered by Russian laws, and focus on those that are not yet reflected in legislation. Examination made by professional lawyers Right FBK (FBK Grant Thornton), and can be widely used in practical activities of companies and organizations, and for further theoretical understanding of the topic, including the development of National action plan for the implementation of the Guidelines, which is one of the possible ways of their adaptation to the national context, or another country adapting the format of the document.

The UN global compact, the largest initiative for a reputable business that seeks to increase its competence in the field of corporate responsibility and sustainable development, taking on commitments to match the progressive values of human rights, labour relations, environment, combating corruption, and to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development Goals to 2030 (sdgs). The concept of the Global compact, the attention to man, his personality, dignity and opportunity to exercise their rights in all spheres of life, where he comes into contact with the business, or consequences of these activities. Therefore, the theme of “business and human rights” is one of the key for more than 13,000 participants of the UN Global compact around the world. The Russian national Global compact network also includes this topic in their priorities, and with the support of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has been active in the framework created under the umbrella of the Working group on human rights and labour relations.

Inclusive of the Interact project is a synergy of theater and cinema with the aim of creating a positive image of people with down syndrome. The project includes different media formats, for example, artistic movies, documentary film “Eat the ELEPHANT”, a theatrical production with actors – children and adults with down syndrome. The project aims to break stereotypes about people with special health and to form them fair positive attitude. This is a good, modern, bright art, designed for a wide audience. People with down syndrome — an amazing talented actors, and the emotional and accessible performances and movies with their participation can once and for all to turn the audience’s consciousness. Participation in the cultural program of the Forum will help the pupils of the theatre to show their talents and skills of professional actors, therefore, gain more confidence and will surely remain one of the brightest impressions of their lives. For the project “Interaction” this will be a big step towards achieving the mission the widest possible dissemination of information about the real abilities of people with peculiarities of mental development, to the formation of humane and adequate public opinion towards people with down syndrome.
